Parrot Care 101: 5 Essentials for a Happy, Healthy Bird
Parrots are intelligent, emotionally complex, and rewarding companions, but they require specialized care to truly thrive. If you are new to parrot ownership, focusing on these five areas will ensure your feathered friend lives a long and happy life.
- 1. Spacious Housing & Environment: Choose the largest cage possible to allow for movement, exercise, and space for toys. Place the cage in a busy, well-lit area of your home, as parrots are social creatures that enjoy being part of the family flock.
- 2. A Balanced Diet: A high-quality pellet diet should make up 60-70% of their intake, supplemented daily with fresh fruits, vegetables, and leafy greens. Avoid seed-only diets, which lead to nutritional deficiencies.
- 3. Regular Mental Enrichment & Toys: Parrots are highly intelligent and need mental stimulation to prevent boredom, which can lead to feather plucking. Rotate toys regularly and provide foraging activities that make them “work” for treats.
- 4. Regular Bathing/Showering: Bathing promotes healthy skin and feathers. Offer shallow water bowls or mist your bird with lukewarm water 3-4 times a week.
- 5. Daily Out-of-Cage Time: Parrots need time outside their cage to fly and interact safely to avoid becoming “overweight perch potatoes”.
